Writing

At Watton at Stone Primary and Nursery School, we believe that every child is a writer. We are passionate about developing every child’s knowledge, motivation and confidence for writing. Since September 2024, we have been using the HFL Education's ESSENTIAL WRITING planning  as a basis for delivering our writing curriculum for years 1 - 6. This is an ambitious and progressive writing scheme which provides our children with opportunities and tools to write for a range of specific purposes and authentic audiences. From autumn 2025, we extended the use of the HFL ESSENTIAL WRITING scheme to our Nursery and Reception classes. As a result of using this planning scheme throughout the school, our children feel inspired and ready to write high-quality outcomes within a range of contexts. Our ambition for the children is to develop the knowledge, strategies and confidence to write in their own lives for a variety of purposes.

Each year group has between 11-14 teaching units, all of which use diverse and high-quality literature as good examples of writing craft. These texts help to inspire children to write and form the basis of our reading spine too.

ESSENTIAL WRITING is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for English including writing composition, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation for each year group.  Each writing unit is progressively structured and centred around the different writing purposes: to entertain; to inform; to persuade and to discuss.
