Bonjour! Welcome to our new French page. We're so excited to share all the wonderful ways we bring languages to life. Learning a foreign language is a key part of our curriculum, helping our pupils to become confident communicators and global citizens.
From the spring term of Year 2, our pupils enjoy weekly French lessons, and develop their skills and knowledge primarily through Language Angels songs and games. We focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a fun and engaging way. Our goal is for every child to leave us with a passion for language and a solid foundation for their secondary school studies.
What will my child learn?
Our curriculum covers a range of exciting topics, including:
-
Weather: Quel temps fait-il? (what’s the weather like?)
-
Colours and numbers: Le bleu, le rouge... un, deux, trois...
-
Families: As-tu des frères et soeurs? (Do you have brothers and sisters?)
-
Talking about pets: As-tu un animal? (Do you have a pet?)
-
Food and drink: Je voudrais une pomme. (I would like an apple.)
-
Talking about what they do at the weekend: Je joue au foot (I play football)
Each teaching unit is divided into 6 fully planned lessons.
-
Each unit and lesson will have clearly defined objectives and aims.
-
Each lesson will incorporate interactive whiteboard materials to include ample speaking and listening tasks within a lesson.
-
Reading and writing activities will be offered in all units.
-
Every unit will include a grammar concept which will increase in complexity as pupils move from Early Language units, through Intermediate units and into Progressive units.
Units are progressive within themselves as subsequent lessons within a unit build on the language and knowledge taught in previous lessons. As pupils progress though the lessons in a unit they will build their knowledge and develop the complexity of the language they use.
Vocabulary
The Language Angels scheme of work includes a comprehensive list of vocabulary that are to be taught in each unit. Our children are encouraged to use read, write and speak the French vocabulary taught in each unit.
French Themed Day – 29th January 2025
On Wednesday 29th January, we had a French day in school. Both children and staff dressed in French inspired outfits. There were some amazing outfits worn by the children. During the day, the children enjoyed speaking and listening in French throughout the day, sampling different French foods (croissants, brie, French bread and quiche) and singing in French. In class, some children played a French song on their recorder, others made beautiful Eiffel Tower string art and in P.E lessons, children learnt to play traditional French games (Boccia and Boules).
